Pelvis Injuries, X-Rays and CT Scans by Dr. Anthony Ferrara

We had two cases last week that showed how pelvic fractures can be missed by simple X-Rays. Both patients had unfortunate accidents where they fell to the ground. They were able to get up but had pain when they walked. They were able to bear weight but complained of hip pain. X-Rays showed no obvious fractures. So, we continued to investigate by ordering a pelvis CT or CAT Scan. In both cases, the CT scan revealed hair line fractures. By making this diagnosis by CT scan, we were able to get the patients the correct physical therapy to treat their injuries effectively and alleviate their pain. I saw one of those patients yesterday, and she was already walking with a walker with no hip pain. Thanks to the CT scan, next week she should be walking with no walker and no hip pain.
